| A Memorial to a Better Philadelphia | ||
| Program : A light well and water space with adjacent vender area
Idea : To reopen the Gimbal’s subway entry marking the site of former City Planning Director Edmund Bacon’s 1947 “Better Philadelphia Exhibit”. |
History : The “Better Philadelphia Exhibition” at the Gimbals Department Store, in 1947, allowed Edmund Bacon with Architect Oscar Stonorov to propose a vision of the city in 1977. A scale model of a “Better Philadelphia” took up an entire room in the store. Their plan for reviving Market Street East was realized in the construction of The Gallery in 1970. Gimbals relocated across the street to the Gallery and the original store, on this site, was demolished in 1979. | |
